What kind of solution can i make for basil?

i want to grow some basil plants in a jar of solution. A bit like hydroponics. But i have no idea how to make the solution. A friend told me a bit of sugar will help drooping flowers brighten up a bit, but i need something that will help my plants GROW.
Don’t tell me to buy a hydroponics solution. Cos i’m not gonna do it (there are problems with that option, you see).
What i want to know is:
What can i put in tap water THAT I CAN FIND IN THE KITCHEN so that i can make my plants grow? If they can’t be found in the kitchen, mention it anyway. I don’t wanna be spending my money on stuff that cost $20 more than its equivalent in the kitchen, just because it’s been fiddled with by scientists.
And tell me how much i need of it too.
