How To Make Money Kayak

Moving to New Zealand! Help!?
Two friends and myself have decided to uproot and go live the dream for awhile in New Zealand. We have many questions and would love any help and suggestions we could get. We plan on crossing in March of 2009. We would like to get work visas to make some money for our bills but the main reason we are heading over is to vacation. We are all in our mid-twenties and have college degrees. We want to come over and escape the hustle and bustle of the US for awhile. We are considering this an early retirement (while we can enjoy backpacking and adventure without arthritis).
Does anyone have suggestions of how we can live low-key? Where to head first? Is there anywhere you can kayak and backpack for days on end with just a tent and some food? What is the cost of living lately (since the currency markets are so crazy)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
hmm thats quite a big question.
well regarding the low key life and kayaking and backpacking for days on end i’d say head straight to the top of the south island to the nelson/golden bay area there you will find golden sand beaches and the gorgeous abel tasman national park.
see http://www.abeltasman.co.nz/
there you can spend up to a week orso tenting / kayaking or a mixture of both. there is no electricity supplied at the huts for walkers so you’d be wanting to take gas cookers with you, it really is the best escape ever!! (no cellphone reception either) this link will tell you more about the track itself too

i think it costs $10 a night to camp on the track.
i’m not sure whether you’d be planning on renting a place..?? but heres a link to current rental properties throughout NZ – the prices tend to be per week but remember your dollar is worth more than ours.

I hope this is of some help, the weather in march will be great, by May it’ll be starting to get cool as winter starts in June.
Good luck!
