There were lots of customs / rituals / procedures followed by every religion. They have both literary and expressional meanings. There were lots signs, bad omens, right and wrong signals came through prophesies to us. It was clearly explained with the wisdom behind it. But over a period of time some people protected this information and even some are lost. When any of these are followed without knowing its inner meaning it is called Superstition.
Example : Dog crying, Cat crossing, right leg hitting and slipping, left leg hitting and slipping, lizard falling on you,
But there is lots stupid superstition, which are followed by insecure people. For example, not to stand from the current position when batsman is batting well like that.
Yes you are right some of the superstitious are imposed by some sect of people to make things benefit for them.
Eg: Some sect would say people should not marry in a particular month. But they would marry in this month.
True Experience & Joke :
Whenever cat used to cross me, I never used to stop. I was totally against it. I felt it was stupidity. But one day, it crossed me 12 times. Then I was going to my friend’s house for studies. After reaching there I changed my dress, before going to bed, I told my friend, how stupid this thought was (cat crossing). We slept, suddenly around 11.30 p.m., call came from one of his relatives (pregnancy pain) and had to rush to hospital. We somehow managed to arrange a car, and we rushed to her house. When we were leaving, one lady banged the door and my finger got stuck in the door. Trust me it was such a worst pain. I was shouting along with the pregnant women. In fact, she started laughing in between.
Since then I believe in some of them followed seriously.
