How To Make Money Welding

Can my boyfriend get a small student loan just for welding school supplies?
My boyfriend who is a veteran of the US Army, wants to go back to school to learn how to weld. He is getting his tuition payed for by the US but he doesn’t think they will cover the cost of supplies. Apparently welding supplies can cost up to $1,000. We don’t have that kind of money to shell out for school right now. We could make monthly payments and pay it off in
6 months or so. Also, we don’t know too much about student loans and our options. He is really nervous to talk to financial aid because he doesn’t like to admit he can’t afford it all off the bat. I am going to make him call next week though for sure, even if I have to dial the number myself!
Anyways, does anyone know what our options are? Could he get a small student loan to pay off this amount? OR is there a way to get a credit card to pay this off, even if he has not so good credit?
Thank you!!
First, he has no reason to be ashamed! So many people do not have the money, or refer to get aid. That is what the financial aid office is there for! And he served our country, he deserves to be compensated for that.
The school would be the first to look at, as they may actually cover this cost. You need to get on finacial aid offices about including materials in your need package. If there is not enough money to cover this cost, they may have internal loans or grants to help.
There are always private loans that you can apply for. He may be able to get one but with bad credit will probably need a cosigner. A private loan can be used for any expenses.
But please, talk to the financial aid office. He needs to tell them that he wants the materials cost covered in his need amount as much as possible.
There are so many out there who can afford these things and still go to financial aid to save money… so there is no reason to feel shame. A man who served our nation should feel no such thing.
