How do authors make money when their books go to libraries?

Well, the library pays for however many copies they lend out. I imagine the authors look on it as free advertising. Several times, I’ve borrowed a book by someone I haven’t read before, and have then bought one or more of that author’s other books.

In some countries, there is a scheme called the Public Lending Right (that’s what it’s called in Britain, anyway – it may have different names in other countries). The government allocates a pot of money (not a huge amount, but better than nothing), and then gives it to authors in proportion to the number of times their books are borrowed.

In Britain, the amount that an individual author can earn from PLR in a year is capped, so that people like J K Rowling and Stephen King, who already sell by the truckload and don’t need this sort of assistance, don’t walk off with most of the money, leaving those authors to whom it could make a difference with next to nothing.
